Semana de la Cultura Baracoense

Held each last week of March in Baracoa, Cuba's first Spanish-founded city, established in 1511 and home to the island's first Roman Catholic bishopric from 1517, the Semana de la Cultura Baracoesa features tres musician gatherings, danzon workshops and the Fiesta del Nengon y Kiriba honoring musical forms considered ancestral roots of Cuban son, closing with a pilgrimage to the Duaba obelisk commemorating an 1895 independence-war landing.

Baracoa's Semana de la Cultura runs each year during the last week of March, celebrated in a city whose own founding in 1511 by Spanish conquistadors under Diego Velazquez de Cuellar makes it, by wide consensus, the first city established in Cuba and the site of the island's first Roman Catholic bishopric, formally created in 1517 by papal bull under Pope Leo X, giving Baracoa its enduring title as Ciudad Primada, or Primal City.
