Festival Internacional de Cine Pobre de Gibara in Gibara

Founded by filmmaker Humberto Solas in April 2003 in the coastal town of Gibara, Holguin province, to showcase films made on budgets under three hundred thousand dollars, this festival was renamed for Solas after his 2008 death, briefly broadened its scope under director Jorge Perugorria around 2015 to 2017, and has since returned to its founding name and dates, drawing more than five hundred works from about thirty-five countries in a recent nineteenth edition.

Filmmaker Humberto Solas founded the Festival Internacional de Cine Pobre in the coastal town of Gibara, Holguin province, in April 2003, building an alternative circuit specifically for films made on budgets under three hundred thousand dollars, a deliberate rejection of the assumption that limited economic resources meant limited artistic ambition.
