The story

Circuba Festival Internacional de Circo in Havana

Launched in 1981 as only the third circus festival of its kind worldwide, after Monte-Carlo and Paris, Circuba is Cuba's competitive international circus showcase, rooted in the National Circus of Cuba founded in 1968. Suspended during the 1991 economic crisis and revived from 2007, it now runs each summer in Havana as the leading circus festival of Central and South America, judging troupes across acrobatics, aerial work and clowning.

When Circuba began in 1981, it was only the third circus festival of its kind in the world, preceded solely by Monaco's Festival International du Cirque de Monte-Carlo and Paris's Cirque de Demain.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Circuba's founding in 1981 makes it one of only three circus festivals of its generation anywhere in the world, alongside Monte-Carlo and the Cirque de Demain in Paris, a lineage most circus events cannot claim

02

The mystery stays covered

Its suspension during Cuba's 1991 economic crisis and full revival by 2010 gives it a documented history of institutional survival unusual for an arts festival

03

The city starts moving

The event is explicitly competitive and juried across circus disciplines rather than a single touring show, drawing companies from across Latin America to compete for recognition in a genre with few dedicated international festivals of this standing
