The story

Festival de la Salsa en Cuba in Havana

Created in 2016 by musician Maykel Blanco and grown from a modest start in Parque Almendares into an international event, Havana's Festival de la Salsa en Cuba reached its tenth edition in February with more than twenty orchestras performing across the city, dedicated that year to the seventieth anniversary of Orquesta Reve, framing the festival as Cuban popular music returning to its place of origin.

Musician Maykel Blanco created the Festival de la Salsa en Cuba in 2016 specifically to showcase good Cuban popular dance music from its place of origin with a contemporary perspective, starting modestly in Havana's Parque Almendares before growing into an international-scale event drawing thousands of visiting salseros from around the world.

02

The mystery stays covered

Its growth from a modest Parque Almendares start in 2016 to more than twenty orchestras across multiple Havana stages by its tenth edition documents rapid, specific expansion in scale over roughly a decade
