Festival de Teatro de La Habana in Havana

Founded in 1980 and restructured into a non-competitive international showcase after Camaguey created its own prize-based theatre festival in 1983, the Festival de Teatro de La Habana brings international and Cuban companies to the capital's stages every two years. Programming spans adult drama, children's theatre, puppet theatre, street theatre and performance, with past guests including Dario Fo and Denise Stoklos.

The Festival de Teatro de La Habana began in 1980 as a competitive review of Cuban theatre, then changed shape entirely in 1983 when Camaguey launched its own National Theatre Festival to take over the competitive role, freeing the Havana event to become something rarer: a non-competitive international showcase that opens the capital's stages to whatever its curators judge the most innovative theatre being made anywhere.
