The story

Festival La Huella de Espana in Havana

Founded February 14, 1988, at the Castillo de la Real Fuerza by Spanish diplomat Juan Jose Santos Aguado and prima ballerina Alicia Alonso, Festival La Huella de Espana has run for more than three decades, its thirty-first edition spanning April 22 to 26 in Havana, spotlighting Spain's regional cultures, Valencia, Andalucia, Galicia and the Canary and Balearic Islands among them, through dance, music and cinema performed partly by Cuba's own Spanish-descendant societies.

Festival La Huella de Espana traces its founding to February 14, 1988, staged at the historic esplanade of the Castillo de la Real Fuerza and conceived jointly by then Spanish Consul General Juan Jose Santos Aguado and prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, giving the festival a founding partnership between diplomacy and Cuba's most internationally significant ballet figure from its very first edition.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This festival's founding partnership between a Spanish diplomat and Alicia Alonso, Cuba's most internationally significant ballet figure, gives it a documented dual-nation origin story distinct from purely government-organized cultural exchange festivals, and its practice of rotating focus across specific Spanish autonomous communities in different editions, Galician gaita bagpipe music featured in one documented year, gives the event a regionally specific rather than generically national Spanish identity

02

The mystery stays covered

Performances staged by Cuba's own organized Spanish immigrant-descended societies treat this heritage as a living Cuban tradition rather than imported entertainment
