Muestra Joven ICAIC

Running for exactly twenty years from its first 2000 edition, originally named the National Young Audiovisual Exhibition, to its conclusion in 2020, Muestra Joven ICAIC was created amid the Cuban Film Institute's 1990s budget crisis as a showcase for young, lower-budget audiovisual work. It served as the main institutional bridge between Cuba's state cultural agencies and independent young filmmakers, a relationship credited with shaping much of new-millennium independent Cuban cinema.

Muestra Joven ICAIC ran for exactly twenty years, from its first edition, held under the name National Young Audiovisual Exhibition from October 31 to November 3, 2000, to its conclusion in 2020, and its origin story is tied directly to Cuban cinema's own economic history: the severe budget shortfalls ICAIC faced during the 1990s economic crisis meant the institute could no longer finance large-scale film production at its former scale, and creating a dedicated showcase for young, lower-budget audiovisual work became both a practical response to that constraint and a deliberate investment in a new generation of Cuban filmmakers.
