The story

Fiesta de la Cultura Iberoamericana in Holguin

Established in 1992 to mark the 500th anniversary of the encounter between Europe and the Americas, Holguin's Fiesta de la Cultura Iberoamericana pairs an academic Congress of Thought and Literary Colloquium with visual arts, cinema, music, dance and the Iberoarte handicrafts fair. Held each October, it draws delegations from Spain, Portugal and Latin America into a provincial Cuban city not otherwise known for this scale of international cultural traffic.

Holguin's Casa de Iberoamerica opened its doors in 1992, the same year the city launched the Fiesta de la Cultura Iberoamericana to mark the fifth centennial of the encounter between Europe and the Americas.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's defining feature is its pairing of scholarly debate with public celebration: the Ibero-American Congress of Thought and a Literary Colloquium sit on the same programme as concerts, craft fairs and gallery exhibitions, treating cultural dialogue itself as the subject rather than any single artistic discipline

02

The mystery stays covered

It grew directly out of the 1992 inauguration of Holguin's Casa de Iberoamerica, giving it an institutional anchor most Cuban arts festivals lack

03

The city starts moving

The Iberoarte International Handicrafts Fair is a standout strand, bringing artisans from across the Ibero-American world into a provincial capital, while the event's reach extends into Holguin's surrounding municipalities rather than staying confined to the city centre
