Festival de Teatro de Calle Matanzas in Matanzas
Known locally as El Callejero, Matanzas's Jornada Internacional de Teatro Callejero is an annual street theatre gathering that has grown over many editions, one of which marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of Juan Candela, a landmark production by Teatro El Mirion Cubano. Performances take over the city's streets and public squares directly, drawing local and international companies to a form of theatre built around public space rather than a seated indoor audience.
Matanzas earned its nickname, the Athens of Cuba, for a nineteenth-century intellectual and artistic life that still shapes the city's cultural self-image, and it is fitting that this same city hosts the Jornada Internacional de Teatro Callejero, known locally simply as El Callejero, an annual street theatre gathering that has built what organisers describe as a genuine family of theatre-makers and audiences around it over its many editions.
