Taller/Festival Internacional de Titeres de Matanzas in Matanzas
Created in 1994 by Teatro Papalote, later Teatro de las Estaciones, with the Consejo de Artes Escenicas de Matanzas, this biennial puppet theatre festival was explicitly modelled on France's Charleville-Mezieres world puppetry gathering. Directed by Ruben Dario Salazar, it has become an indispensable fixture in Latin American puppet theatre, staged in the city nicknamed Atenas de Cuba for its historic intellectual life.
Matanzas earned the nickname Atenas de Cuba, the Athens of Cuba, for its outsized nineteenth-century intellectual and artistic life, and it is this city, rather than Havana, that hosts Cuba's leading puppet theatre gathering.
