The story

Festival Internacional de Danza en Paisajes Urbanos Habana Vieja in Old Havana

Founded in 1996 by choreographer Isabel Bustos and her company Danza Teatro Retazos, in partnership with the Office of the Historian of Havana, this festival turns Old Havana's parks, plazas and colonial streets into stages for dance. Part of the international Cities that Dance circuit since 1999, it remains one of Latin America's most recognised urban landscape dance festivals.

Habana Vieja: Ciudad en Movimiento began in 1996 as the initiative of a single dance company, Danza Teatro Retazos, founded and directed by the Chilean-Ecuadorian choreographer Isabel Bustos, working in partnership with the Office of the Historian of Havana and the Havana Theatre Centre.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's defining feature is genuinely site-specific staging: choreography performed directly against Old Havana's restored colonial facades, cathedral squares and narrow streets rather than inside a conventional theatre, chosen as the artistic premise rather than a fallback

02

The mystery stays covered

Its membership since 1999 in Cities that Dance, an international circuit founded in Barcelona in 1992, connects Havana's edition to a wider network of urban dance festivals across Europe and the Americas

03

The city starts moving

Passers-by in Old Havana's UNESCO-listed streets often become spontaneous audiences alongside dedicated festival-goers, a blurring of public space and performance uncommon in conventional dance festivals
