The story

Semana de la Cultura Pinareña in Pinar del Rio

Growing out of the Dia de la Dignidad Pinarena, formally dated to 1943 municipal records, Pinar del Rio's culture week became an eight-day Jornada de la Cultura Pinarena from 2014, running through to December 3, Latin American Medicine Day. Recent editions under the slogan from tradition to contemporaneity have been dedicated to themes such as women's cultural contributions and the centenary of musician Nino Rivera, with institutions including UNEAC, the Provincial Museum and the Praga Cinema participating directly.

Pinar del Rio's culture week grew directly out of an older, narrower observance: the Dia de la Dignidad Pinarena, Pinar's Day of Dignity, whose roots trace to municipal council records from August 2, 1943, under the presidency of Tomas Calero Pino, legitimising the date as a formal civic occasion.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Pinar del Rio's week is distinguished by its layered civic anchoring: it opens on the Dia de la Dignidad Pinarena, a date formally documented in 1943 municipal records, and closes on December 3, Latin American Medicine Day, giving it two fixed calendar touchpoints rather than one

02

The mystery stays covered

Its direct institutional backbone, involving the province's UNEAC branch, Provincial Library, Provincial Museum, Factoria de Letras and Praga Cinema by name, reflects a more formally coordinated structure than a loosely assembled arts programme, and its rotating annual thematic dedications tie contemporary programming to specific local cultural figures and causes each year
