Festival de la Conga de Los Hoyos in Santiago de Cuba

Born in 1902 in Santiago de Cuba's Los Hoyos neighbourhood, this conga tradition has run continuously for over a century, drawing on African, Caribbean and specifically Franco-Haitian musical influences carried by refugees into Santiago. Culturally transmitted across generations within the neighbourhood, the conga's parades can run more than four hours with the entire community following behind, and its cultural significance has earned it the National Community Culture Prize and inclusion in Santiago's 2019 Cultural Heritage of the Nation declaration.

The Conga de los Hoyos was born in 1902 in Los Hoyos, one of Santiago de Cuba's oldest and most storied working-class neighbourhoods, and has remained a fixture of the city's carnival for more than a century since, making it one of the longest continuously performed Afro-Caribbean carnival traditions documented anywhere in Cuba.
