Festival del Caribe - Fiesta del Fuego in Santiago de Cuba
Fiesta del Fuego, running each July 3 to 9 in Santiago de Cuba since its 1981 founding as the First Festival of Performing Arts of Caribbean Origin, gathers more than two thousand artists from around eighteen countries across forty venues, honoring a different guest Caribbean or Latin American country each year and closing with the ritual burning of a large effigy called the Diablo.
Fiesta del Fuego began in April 1981 under the title First Festival of Performing Arts of Caribbean Origin, and has grown into a week-long gathering, running from July 3 to 9 in recent editions, that brings more than two thousand artists and intellectuals from roughly eighteen countries together with a similar number of Cuban participants across as many as forty different spaces around Santiago de Cuba.
