The story

Tumba Festival in Curacao Festival Center

A four-night musical competition at Curacao's Festival Center in Brievengat, running since 1971, in which performers compete to be crowned Tumba King or Queen and have their song adopted as the island's official Carnival anthem for the coming season. The event moved through several venues before settling permanently at the Brievengat site.

A local musical style once sung by enslaved women as an outlet for pain and sadness, tumba earned the nickname the Curacao blues for that origin, and since 1971 it has had its own dedicated four-day competition built specifically to make it, rather than the calypso genre that dominated earlier Curacao carnivals, the island's official Carnival music.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival directly decides Curacao Carnival's official soundtrack each year, crowning a Tumba King or Queen whose winning song becomes that season's anthem, a competitive format tracing back to 1971 and to tumba's seventeenth-century origins as a genre first sung by enslaved women, nicknamed the Curacao blues

02

The mystery stays covered

Anselmus Boy Dap, remembered as the father of tumba, won the inaugural 1971 contest, and Farley Lourens remains the only singer to win three years running
