Willemstad UNESCO Heritage Festival in Historic Willemstad
Willemstad's historic centre, spanning the Punda, Otrobanda, Scharloo and Pietermaai districts, has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1997, but no independently confirmed standalone event under the name Willemstad UNESCO Heritage Festival could be located. The heritage itself is permanent and walkable year-round rather than concentrated into a single festival weekend.
A trading settlement founded by the Dutch in 1634 around a natural harbour grew, over three and a half centuries, into the collection of colourful merchant facades and colonial streets that earned Willemstad's historic centre a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997, and that designation itself, rather than a standalone Willemstad UNESCO Heritage Festival, is the most solidly documented part of this listing.
