Assumption Festival Kykkos

Kykkos Monastery, home to the icon Panagia i Eleousa tou Kykkou attributed by tradition to Saint Luke, holds the biggest Assumption of the Virgin celebration in Cyprus each August 15, with candlelit processions through the monastery's courtyards and pilgrims bringing first-fruit offerings. Kykkos separately marks the Birth of the Virgin Mary each September 8 as its second major annual feast.

An icon attributed by tradition to Saint Luke the Apostle himself, known as Panagia i Eleousa tou Kykkou, draws thousands of believers from across the world to Kykkos Monastery each fifteenth of August for what is documented as the biggest Assumption of the Virgin celebration held anywhere in Cyprus, a candlelit procession through the monastery's pine-scented courtyards marking the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, her passing and ascension into heaven, at one of the most important monasteries in the entire Orthodox Christian world.
