Larnaca Kataklysmos Festival in Larnaca

Kataklysmos, Larnaca's largest and oldest annual festival, fills the Foinikoudes seafront promenade fifty days after Orthodox Easter with stalls, a beachfront funfair, water sports competitions and stage performances including the UNESCO-recognised Karakiozis shadow theatre and Tsiattista rhyming poetry duels. A local custom of splashing water on friends gives the festival's flood-themed name a lived, participatory dimension.

UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list carries this event under its own official name, the Kataklysmos Fair, celebrating Pentecost, formal recognition of what is already Larnaca's largest and oldest annual celebration, running continuously for more than a century and drawing on layered origins that blend the biblical flood of Noah, the local tradition that the resurrected Saint Lazarus came ashore at Larnaca, and older pagan waterfront feasts once held in honour of Aphrodite, the goddess of love said to have been born from sea foam nearby.
