Lefkara Lace Festival in Lefkara

Lefkara's Summer Festival runs roughly ten days each August across the split village of Pano and Kato Lefkara, celebrating Lefkaritika, the UNESCO-recognised handmade lace tradition linked by legend to Leonardo da Vinci, alongside silversmithing. The programme combines live music, dance, theatre, street food, craft workshops and demonstrations by artisans working the same techniques practised since Venetian rule.

A piece of Lefkara lace said to have been carried back to Italy by Leonardo da Vinci himself after a fifteenth-century visit to Cyprus, and reportedly used today to decorate Milan Cathedral, gives Lefkaritika, the handmade white embroidery lace of Pano and Kato Lefkara, a documented legend reaching back further than almost any other traditional Cypriot craft, and UNESCO formally recognised the technique on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009.
