The story

Brno Christmas in Brno

Brno's Christmas tree tradition on Freedom Square began in 1924, when writer Rudolf Tesnohlidek, moved by having found an abandoned child in a nearby forest, erected a charity tree inspired by a Copenhagen custom, believed to be the first public Christmas tree of its kind in Czechoslovakia. The modern market has grown around that tree with around sixty stalls and a large winter bar, ranked among Europe's top Christmas markets.

Brno's Christmas tree tradition on Freedom Square began in 1924 with a genuinely personal motive: writer Rudolf Tesnohlidek, who had found an almost frozen young girl named Liduska abandoned in the snowdrifts of the Bilovice forest in 1919, was so affected by her fate that he looked for a way to help other abandoned children in the city.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few civic Christmas trees anywhere carry as specific and documented a founding story as Brno's: writer Rudolf Tesnohlidek erected the original 1924 tree, inspired by a Copenhagen charity custom, specifically to raise money for abandoned children after his own encounter with a nearly frozen abandoned girl in 1919, a charitable purpose that has stayed part of the tradition for a century

02

The mystery stays covered

Being widely credited as Czechoslovakia's first public Christmas tree gives Brno's market a genuine historical first rather than simply a large decorative display

03

The city starts moving

Freedom Square's compact, walkable central location also gives visitors a considerably less crowded alternative to Prague's larger, more tourist-dense Christmas markets while still ranking among Europe's best
