The story

Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival in Jihlava

Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival grew from an idea by a group of Jihlava high school students in 1997, led by Marek Hovorka, who still directs it. Now organised by DOC.DREAM and recognised as Central and Eastern Europe's largest documentary festival, it runs distinct competition strands including Czech Joy, Opus Bonum and Fascinations, alongside the East Silver documentary market and DAFilms.com platform it helped launch.

Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival was conceived in 1997 by a group of high school students in the industrial Czech town of Jihlava, led by Marek Hovorka, who has directed the festival ever since; the founders, coming of age in the years following the 1989 Velvet Revolution, originally set out simply to bring outside speakers and ideas to their hometown.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few major European film festivals were literally founded by teenagers: Ji

02

The mystery stays covered

hlava's 1997 origin as a project by Jihlava high school students, still directed by founder Marek Hovorka nearly three decades later, gives it a grassroots continuity uncommon among festivals of its current scale

03

The city starts moving

Its layered competition structure, Czech Joy, Between the Seas, Opus Bonum and Fascinations, built up section by section between 2000 and 2008, lets it showcase domestic, regional and formally experimental documentary work through distinct, purpose-built categories rather than one general competition

04

The water draws everyone in

Co-founding the East Silver documentary market and the DAFilms

05

The old stones answer

com platform also gives the festival infrastructure reach into distribution and industry access well beyond its own annual screenings
