The story

Finale Plzen in Plzeň

Finale Plzen held its first edition in 1968 during a brief political thaw, awarding its Golden Kingfisher prize to Ewald Schorm's Courage for Every Day, before being shut down within three years under Normalization-era cultural controls. Revived in 1990 after the Velvet Revolution, it has grown into the Czech Republic's largest showcase of national cinema, running competition sections for feature films, documentaries, television productions and student work each spring.

Finale Plzen held its first edition in 1968, screening the best of Czechoslovak filmmaking during the brief political thaw that preceded the Soviet-led invasion later that same year, with Ewald Schorm's Courage for Every Day winning the inaugural Golden Kingfisher award, a trophy whose kingfisher symbol, sometimes called the Flying Gemstone, became the festival's lasting emblem of hope and faith in political change.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few film festivals carry as direct a symbolic link to a country's political history as Finale Plzen does, founded in 1968 amid genuine hope for reform, suppressed within three years as that hope was crushed, and revived in 1990 the moment political freedom returned, with its kingfisher trophy explicitly representing faith in political change rather than simply artistic merit

02

The mystery stays covered

Being the largest showcase of national cinema in the Czech Republic gives it a defensible claim distinct from smaller regional or genre-specific festivals

03

The city starts moving

Its multi-section structure, covering feature films, documentaries, television and student work within a single event, gives industry professionals a genuinely comprehensive annual view of domestic production rather than a narrow single-category competition
