The story

Letni Letna in Prague

Letni Letna began in 2004 with a single tent and around six thousand spectators, organised by Spolecnost GASPARD to build contemporary circus as an art form in the Czech Republic. Staged each summer on the open ground of Letna Park known as the green meadow, it has grown to draw more than fifty thousand spectators, with a cumulative 2,050 shows and 517,000 attendees across two decades, and has held the EFFE quality label since 2015.

Letni Letna began in 2004 with a single tent and about six thousand spectators, organised by Spolecnost GASPARD, a company established in 1999 specifically to organise, support and develop contemporary circus as an art form in the Czech Republic, a genre with far less institutional infrastructure at the time than conventional theatre or music.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few circus festivals anywhere have grown as steeply as Letni Letna, from a single tent and six thousand spectators in 2004 to more than fifty thousand by 2021, a trajectory that mirrors the broader rise of contemporary circus as a recognised art form across Europe over the same period

02

The mystery stays covered

Its setting, an open meadow inside Letna Park rather than a purpose-built circus venue, gives the festival an informal, park-picnic atmosphere unusual for an event of its scale and international programming ambition

03

The city starts moving

Holding the EFFE quality label since 2015, a European-wide recognition for festivals meeting defined artistic and organisational standards, places it in a formally vetted tier most regional circus events do not reach
