The story

Prague Christmas Markets in Prague

Old Town Square has served as a marketplace since the tenth century, and its modern Christmas market, the largest in the Czech Republic, now draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from home and abroad each Advent. Wooden stalls selling mulled wine, trdelnik and crafts surround a large decorated tree beneath the Gothic spires of the Tyn Church, a setting CNN ranked among the world's ten best Christmas markets in 2016.

Old Town Square has functioned as a marketplace since the tenth century, sitting at the crossroads of European trade routes with thirteen stone cots once selling imported cloth around the base of the town hall tower and portable stalls run by bakers, potters and gingerbread makers filling the square around it.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few Christmas markets anywhere sit on ground with this much continuous commercial history: Old Town Square has functioned as a marketplace since the tenth century, giving the modern holiday market a genuine, centuries-deep continuity rather than a manufactured seasonal setup on borrowed ground

02

The mystery stays covered

Its scale, the largest Christmas market in the Czech Republic, draws an international crowd heavily weighted toward German, Russian, Italian and British visitors, reflecting Prague's position as a major Central European winter destination

03

The city starts moving

The backdrop itself, the Gothic Tyn Church and the medieval astronomical clock framing the market stalls, is part of why CNN placed it among the world's ten best Christmas markets in 2016, a distinction few purpose-built market squares elsewhere can claim
