The story

Signal Festival Prague in Prague

Signal Festival grew from a single 2010 video-mapping projection on Prague's astronomical clock into an annual four-night light-art festival running every October since 2013. Installations by Czech and international artists line set walking routes through central Prague and surrounding districts, drawing crowds that have grown from roughly 250,000 in year one to more than five million visitors across the festival's history.

Signal Festival grew out of a single video-mapping project: in 2010, the Czech art collective Macula and producer Martin Posta projected onto the facade of Prague's medieval astronomical clock to mark its six-hundredth anniversary, and the strength of the public response persuaded Posta, curator Jan Rolnik and Macula artist Amar Mulabegovic to spend roughly three years developing it into a dedicated annual festival.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Signal's installations are built specifically for Prague's own historic architecture, medieval facades, squares and courtyards, rather than staged on a blank festival ground, giving each edition a site-specific character that a touring light-art show could not replicate

02

The mystery stays covered

Attendance growth from around 250,000 in its first year to more than 578,000 by its fourth is unusually steep for a festival built on public installations rather than ticketed headline acts

03

The city starts moving

Named among Europe's top ten light art festivals by The Guardian in 2014, Signal has since expanded its walking routes into outer Prague districts including Vinohrady, Holesovice and Karlin, spreading the crowds beyond the historic centre
