The Summer Shakespeare Festival traces to Vaclav Havel's early-1990s decision to open Prague Castle to artists, with the first production staged in 1990 and regular annual seasons since 1998. Billed as Europe's oldest and biggest open-air Shakespeare festival, it now runs across four cities, Prague's Burgrave Palace courtyard, Brno's Spilberk Castle, Silesian Ostrava Castle and Bratislava Castle, drawing close to ninety thousand attendees each summer season.
