United Islands of Prague in Prague
United Islands of Prague has run free of charge since 2004, funded by voluntary ticket purchases rather than mandatory admission, on and around Prague's river islands along the Vltava. Held each spring, the multi-genre festival focuses on emerging artists from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and across Europe, pairs music with programming on current social issues, and runs a year-round series of club concerts beyond the main weekend.
United Islands of Prague has offered free admission every year since it began in 2004, funding itself instead through voluntary ticket purchases, supporters can buy a ticket to back the festival, but there are no turnstiles and no one is turned away for not paying, a model the festival has kept unchanged across two decades even as it has grown.
