The story

Tabook Festival in Tábor

Tabook was founded in 2012 by Tereza Horvathova and Juraj Horvath of the Baobab publishing house, drawing more than a thousand attendees to its first edition in Tabor. Focused specifically on visual books and illustration, a niche larger book fairs treat as secondary, the festival runs readings, lectures, illustrator exhibitions, seminars, concerts and a dedicated schools programme each autumn, now well into its second decade of editions.

Tabook was founded in 2012 by writer, editor and translator Tereza Horvathova together with illustrator and graphic designer Juraj Horvath, both connected to the Baobab publishing house, out of what organisers describe as a spontaneous desire to build a genuine alternative to the existing book-industry events already operating in the Czech Republic.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few literary festivals are built around as specific a curatorial niche as Tabook's focus on visual books and illustration, a theme that directly reflects founders Tereza Horvathova and Juraj Horvath's own work at the Baobab illustrated-books publishing house rather than a generic literary theme chosen for broad appeal

02

The mystery stays covered

Being founded as a deliberate alternative to existing Czech book-industry events, rather than growing out of an established trade association, gives Tabook a genuinely independent identity distinct from the country's larger state or industry-affiliated book fairs

03

The city starts moving

A dedicated programme track for elementary and middle school students extends the festival's reach into young readers specifically, a demographic focus not every adult-oriented literary festival prioritises
