Sapeurs fill a stretch of Gombe with tailored suits, cravats and mirror-polished shoes every February 10, turning elegance into public performance. The gathering, known as La Sape, honors Stervos Niarcos, the dandy credited with founding the modern movement, and rewards posture and color sense as much as the cut of a jacket. Sapeurs turn a stretch of Gombe into a runway every year, arriving in tailored three-piece suits, pocket squares and shoes polished to a mirror shine for what devotees call La Sape, short for the Societe des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Elegantes.
