The story

National Museum Heritage Festival in National Museum of the DRC

The National Museum of the DRC, opened in Kinshasa's Gombe district in November 2019 with Korean government funding, holds more than 12,000 artifacts from across Congo's ethnic groups. It has begun hosting festival programming inside its halls, including the first edition of Festival Libalart in 2026, though this specific festival identity is new enough that its long-term recurrence is not yet established.

The National Museum of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is a genuinely significant building before any festival calendar is even considered: it opened in Kinshasa's Gombe district on 23 November 2019, inaugurated by President Felix Tshisekedi after a 21 million dollar construction project funded and delivered by the Korea International Cooperation Agency between 2011 and 2019.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes this from a generic museum visit is scale and provenance: 12,000-plus objects across three halls totaling 6,000 square meters, built with 21 million dollars in Korean development funding and handed over with Congolese curators trained to run it rather than depending on Belgian institutional oversight as with the colonial-era predecessor collection

02

The mystery stays covered

Using that space to host contemporary festivals, Festival Libalart's debut edition, a Congolese fashion showcase, turns the museum into an active cultural venue rather than a fixed historical display, letting visitors see ceremonial masks and sacred figurines in the same building where new Congolese creative work is staged
