The story

Odense International Film Festival in Odense

Odense International Film Festival, OFF, began in 1975 as an animation-only International Fairy Tale Festival marking the centenary of Hans Christian Andersen's death, making it Denmark's oldest surviving film festival. Since director Henning Carlsen expanded its scope to all short films in 1983, OFF has run as a week-long, Academy Award-qualifying short film festival each August, distinct from Odense's separate Andersen-themed cultural festival.

Odense marked the hundredth anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen's death in 1975 by launching what it called the International Fairy Tale Festival, an animation-only screening event initiated by local newspaper film editor Bent Aagaard, who directed it for its first seven years, making the event that eventually became Odense International Film Festival the oldest surviving film festival in Denmark.
