Madqa Afar Cultural Celebration

Madqa Afar is a centuries-old system of customary Afar governance and cultural practice, with celebration and preservation efforts spanning Djibouti, Ethiopia and Eritrea, the three countries where Afar communities live. One documented ceremony, held in Semera, Ethiopia and attended by the Sultan of Tadjourah among other regional leaders, combined folk songs and traditional dances with discussion of a shared Afar customary-law framework and a UNESCO intangible-heritage inscription effort.

Madqa Afar is a customary system of governance and cultural practice among the Afar people, with roots that organisers and researchers trace back to the twelfth century and that has continued adapting to different historical and political contexts ever since, making it a genuinely ancient institution rather than a modern cultural invention.
