Mas Domnik Carnival in Roseau/national
Mas Domnik, Dominica's carnival, is known across the Caribbean as The Real Mas for retaining traditional characters and music that many other regional carnivals have largely replaced. Its main street celebration falls on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, featuring Sensay and Bwa Bwa stilt-walker costumes, Lapo Kabwit drumming, and music spanning Bele, Quadrille, calypso and bouyon.
Mas Domnik carries its name and character from a specific claim among Caribbean carnival traditions: unlike many islands' carnivals, which shifted heavily toward imported costume and music styles over the twentieth century, Dominica's version is often called The Real Mas for having kept more of its original character intact.
