Carnaval Vegano, the carnival of La Vega, is widely regarded as the Dominican Republic's oldest and most elaborate carnival tradition, staged across every Sunday in February and known internationally for its diablos cojuelos, limping devils, in elaborate horned masks and bell-covered suits. Performers carry inflated cow-bladder whips called vejigas, swung playfully at spectators as part of the tradition's theatrical character.
