Festival de Atabales Sabana Grande de Boya in Sabana Grande de Boya
Sabana Grande de Boya, part of the Monte Plata cluster of towns known as La Sabana del Espiritu Santo, hosts a festival of atabales, Afro-Dominican devotional hand drumming tied to saints' day observances including the town's own February 2 Candelaria feast. The tradition parallels but is geographically distinct from Villa Mella's better-known palo drumming.
Sabana Grande de Boya sits within a cluster of towns, including San Cristobal, Villa Altagracia, Cotui, Monte Plata and Yamasa, known collectively as La Sabana del Espiritu Santo for their shared Afro-Dominican religious, artistic and musical traditions built around devotion to the Holy Spirit.
