Fiesta de los Congos de Villa Mella in Villa Mella
At Pentecost, the centuries-old Cofradia del Espiritu Santo de los Congos performs its UNESCO-recognized ritual in Villa Mella, combining prayer, drumming on congo, conguito and canoita drums, and a procession honoring the Holy Spirit through a dove image. The brotherhood, founded in the sixteenth century, maintains this specific ceremonial tradition as living religious practice.
At Pentecost, seven weeks after Easter, the Cofradia del Espiritu Santo de los Congos de Villa Mella performs a ritual that UNESCO recognized in 2001, and again under a renewed listing in 2008, as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity: a cycle of prayer, procession, dance and drumming built around devotion to the Holy Spirit.
