Carnaval de Ambato in Ambato
Ambato's carnival replaced the traditional water and flour fights of Ecuadorian carnival with a parade of flower-covered floats celebrating the region's fruit and flower harvest, first organized in 1951 after a devastating 1949 earthquake and declared a national celebration in 1962. Expect flower-decked floats, folk dance troupes, marching bands and a festival queen rather than water balloons.
Ambato is the Ecuadorian city that turned its back on carnival water fights and built a flower and fruit parade instead.
