A devastating earthquake struck Ambato on August 5, 1949, killing thousands and leveling much of the city, and out of that disaster's aftermath residents organized a festival of recovery that formally launched on February 17, 1951, channeling civic resilience into a celebration built around the region's fertile agricultural bounty rather than mourning alone.
