Cuenca Biennial in Cuenca
A contemporary art biennial founded in Cuenca in 1987 by painter Eudoxia Estrella, now organized by the city's own arts foundation and staged roughly every two years across multiple colonial-center venues. What began as a painting competition has expanded into a multi-disciplinary exhibition spanning installation, video and performance, drawing regional and international artists to Ecuador's UNESCO-listed historic city.
Local painter Eudoxia Estrella founded the Bienal de Cuenca in 1987 as a painting competition, a format that has since expanded well beyond its original medium.
