The date is distinct from Cuenca's separate April festival marking the city's original 1557 founding, and residents keep the two occasions clearly separate despite both producing public holidays.
Cuenca declared independence from Spanish rule on November 3, 1820, roughly three weeks after Guayaquil's own declaration set off the wider movement, making it one of several highland cities that broke from colonial authority before the 1822 Battle of Pichincha secured the outcome nationally.
