The story

EDOC Encuentros del Otro Cine in Quito/Guayaquil

Ecuador's longest-running documentary film festival, staged annually in Quito and Guayaquil since 2002 with additional screenings reaching Cuenca, Manta, Ibarra and Portoviejo. Non-competitive and curated rather than juried, EDOC brings international and Ecuadorian nonfiction cinema to cultural centers and university auditoriums, pairing screenings with director talks over several days of dense, low-cost programming.

Corporación Cinememoria, a nonprofit founded in Quito in 2001 to promote documentary film and preserve audiovisual heritage, staged the first edition of Encuentros del Otro Cine in April 2002 across Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

EDOC's non-competitive structure sets it apart from most national film festivals in the region, which typically build their identity around juried awards

02

The mystery stays covered

here the curatorial statement itself is the draw

03

The city starts moving

Organized continuously by the same nonprofit, Corporación Cinememoria, since 2002, it has built a specialized documentary-only identity that has outlasted several broader Ecuadorian film festivals launched in the same era

04

The water draws everyone in

Its reach into secondary cities such as Manta, Ibarra and Portoviejo, alongside the two anchor cities, means the festival functions as a touring national program rather than a single-city event, a structure uncommon among Ecuador's cultural festivals
