Fiestas de Quito in Quito
Quito's annual founding-anniversary celebration, commemorating Sebastian de Benalcazar's December 6, 1534 establishment of the city, running from a late-November queen coronation through the anniversary itself with chivas party buses, concerts and parades across the UNESCO World Heritage historic center, revived in its modern form in 1959.
Spanish conquistador Sebastian de Benalcazar officially founded the city of San Francisco de Quito on December 6, 1534, and Quito's modern Fiestas de Quito, first celebrated in 1959 when a group of friends set out to revive lapsed local traditions, commemorate that founding each year with a season of celebration stretching from late November, marked by the crowning of the Reina de Quito, through the December 6 anniversary itself.
