Fiestas de San Lorenzo Esmeraldas

San Lorenzo's civic festivities run roughly two weeks each July into August, marking both the canton's 1978 founding and Ecuador's national independence cry with float parades, a queen election, gastronomic fairs and a signature communal crab stew. Set in the biodiverse Chocó region of northern Esmeraldas province, the celebrations reflect the area's mix of Afro-Ecuadorian, Awá, Chachi and Épera communities.

San Lorenzo became an Ecuadorian canton on March 22, 1978, and while that founding date remains the formal cantonization anniversary, the town's largest annual civic festivities have long clustered in a different window, running from late July through mid-August and culminating around August 10, a date that also marks Ecuador's own independence cry of Quito.
