Moulid of Sayyida Zainab in Cairo

Sayyida Zainab Mosque, built around a shrine believed to hold the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad's granddaughter, is a major Cairo center for Sufi orders. Each Islamic month of Rajab, more than a hundred thousand devotees fill Sayyida Zainab Square for her moulid, taking part in dhikr chanting and the whirling Hadra ritual led by chanters called morshideen.

Sayyida Zainab Mosque, in the Cairo district that carries her name, is built around a shrine believed to contain the tomb of Zainab bint Ali, granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad through his daughter Fatima and her husband Ali, the fourth caliph, making it one of Cairo's most significant Islamic pilgrimage sites and a recognized center for the city's Sufi orders.
