Fiestas Patronales de Aguilares in Aguilares
Aguilares, a San Salvador department town named for three brothers who were priests and independence-era figures, holds its fiestas patronales from January 6th through 15th in honor of the Senor de las Misericordias, closing on the final night with a traditional fireworks display, or quema de polvora, staged from the site of the old La Toma railway station.
Aguilares carries an unusual distinction among Salvadoran towns: its name honors not a Catholic saint but three brothers, all of them priests, who threw themselves into the movements that led toward Central American independence.
