Festival de los Farolitos Ahuachapan in Ahuachapan
Ahuachapan's Dia de los Farolitos, held every September 7 for more than 170 years, fills the city with handmade paper lanterns and was declared Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de El Salvador by the country's Legislative Assembly, sitting alongside a separate February fiestas patronales honoring the Dulce Nombre de Jesus.
Ahuachapan's Dia de los Farolitos has been observed by residents for more than 170 years, a continuity striking enough that El Salvador's Legislative Assembly moved to formally declare the September 7 celebration part of the country's Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial, recognizing it as intangible cultural heritage worth institutional protection.
