Fiestas Patronales de Ayutuxtepeque in Ayutuxtepeque
Ayutuxtepeque, a San Salvador metropolitan district whose Nahuat name means Hill of Armadillos, holds its main fiestas patronales from January 15th through 20th in honor of Saint Sebastian the Martyr, while its surrounding cantones stage their own separate patronal celebrations featuring historiantes dance processions and the revived tradition of mayordomias.
Ayutuxtepeque's Nahuat name, generally translated as Hill of Armadillos, points to a pre-colonial identity that predates the district's current role as part of the dense San Salvador metropolitan area, sandwiched between Apopa, Cuscatancingo, Ciudad Delgado and Mejicanos just a few kilometers from the capital's center.
