Sugarcane-themed floats, traditional dress, and a specially composed Cancion Tipica mark this Cuscatlan department tradition distinct from the city's separate religious patronal feasts.

On December 31, 1940, a Cojutepeque civic committee faced an oddly specific dilemma: having agreed unanimously to elect a queen representing the department of Cuscatlan's signature crop, sugarcane, members could not initially agree whether to call her the Reina de la Panela or the Reina del Atado, names tied to different traditional forms of unrefined cane sugar.
