Fiestas Patronales de Izalco in Izalco
Izalco, a Sonsonate town with deep Pipil roots, honors the Virgen de la Asuncion/Transito in its Barrio Asuncion each August 15 and the Inmaculada Concepcion in Barrio Dolores each December, including a December 10 procession up the slopes of Izalco volcano begun in 1935. The town maintains around 24 cofradias, traditional religious brotherhoods.
Izalco's devotional life resists easy summary into a single fiestas patronales date, because the town's own history split its identity between two historic barrios, each maintaining its own titular saint and its own annual feast.
