Fiestas Patronales de Mejicanos in Mejicanos
Mejicanos, part of the San Salvador metropolitan area, celebrates its fiestas patronales August 8-15 in honor of Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion, also called locally the Virgen del Transito. The week opens with the Festival de la Yuca, a cassava festival tracing to the 1930s, when yuca growers began wholesale marketing of the crop through Mejicanos.
Each August, the municipality of Mejicanos, now folded into the greater San Salvador metropolitan area but carrying its own distinct traditions, dedicates a full week, August 8 through 15, to Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion, the Virgin Mary under her title of the Assumption.
